A portable medication dispensing system is described. The system includes aportable medication tote comprisinga securable compartment configured to hold medication, and a controller,responsive to access information, configured to assigna patient to the securable compartment such that medications for the patientare authorized for placement into the securablecom-partment. The controller is also configured to selectively permit a useraccess to the medications for the patient in the securablecompartment when the access information indicates the user has access to thesecurable compartment, and restrict access to retrievalof the medications for the patient in the securable compartment when theaccess information indicates the user does not have ac-cessto the securable compartment. The system also includes an information outputmodule configured to output usage informationregarding access to the securable compartment.
