If the components of a surgical instrument are not properly calibrated, errors may occur in the operation of the surgical instrument and consequentlyacontrol system for controlling the surgical instrument may lose itseffectiveness. This problem may be complicated where a variety of different types of surgicalinstruments are used with an electro-mechanical device. The present inventionprovides a system for calibrating a surgical instrument comprising: an electro-mechanicalactuator including a memory unit storing at least predeterminedcalibration data for a number of different surgical instruments; a surgicalinstrument of the number of surgical instruments actuatable by the electro-mechanicalactuator, the surgical instrument having first and secondcomponents that are moveable relative to each other; each surgical instrumentincluding a memory unit storing at least predetermined calibration datacorresponding to the surgical instrument, wherein the calibration data of eachsurgical instrument corresponds to a position of the surgical instrument, theposition of the surgical instrument being a position of the first and secondcomponents relative to each other, wherein the calibration data of thesurgicalinstrument includes a correction factor that corresponds to a differencebetween an actual amount of actuation required to actuate the surgicalinstrument from a first position to a second position, and an expected amountof actuation required to actuate the surgical instrument from the firstposition tothe second position; and a processor configured to determine a position of thesurgical instrument in accordance with at least one of the predeterminedcalibration data of the electro-mechanical actuator and the predeterminedcalibration data of the surgical instrument.
