The present invention pertains to a cleansing composition comprising 4-55 wt.% of a surfactant, 0.1-15 wit.% of a combination of a lactate salt and a gluconate salt, wherein the lactate salt makes up 10-90 wt.% of the total of the lactate salt and the gluconate salt, and water. It was found that the use of a combination of a lactate salt and a gluconate salt in a cleansing composition may serve to improve one or more of the mildness, the foaming properties, the skin feel properties, the viscosity properties, the skin hydration properties, the wet and dry combing properties, the anti-static properties, the hair softness and hair smoothness properties, the hair volume properties, and the hair bounce and hair lightness properties of a cleansing composition.
