A modified live pig reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus is provided. The virus was genetically analyzed and selected based on phylogenetic classification for modification by repeated subculture in tissue culture. The modified live virus was evaluated for its ability to provide protective immunity against a heterologous virus. The modified live virus is useful in vaccines, particularly vaccines that can treat infection of pigs with multiple heterologous viruses.
