PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a less expensive, less complex phlebotomy needle which facilitates visualization of flashback.SOLUTION: A central portion 106 of a needle 100 includes a hole or opening 110 which communicates with a flow channel defined by the needle 100 and a transparent housing 112 is positioned about the opening 110 to facilitate visualization of blood flow through the needle 100. A material which allows passage of air and provides an indication of blood flow through the needle 100 is positioned over the opening 110. The material is in the form of a plug or, alternately, in the form of a patch or collar.
