There is provided an electric heating smoking system comprising an auxiliary unit capable of receiving a smoking article having an aerosol-forming substrate. The auxiliary unit includes at least one heating element and an interface for connection to the main power supply to supply electrical power to the at least one heating element during the preheat mode to increase the temperature of the aerosol- . The auxiliary unit further comprises an auxiliary power supply arranged to supply electrical power to the at least one heating element during the smoking mode to maintain the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate at substantially the operating temperature. The auxiliary unit further includes an auxiliary circuit. The electrically heated smoking system may optionally include a main unit comprising a main power supply and a main circuit.
