The present invention relates to a branched or unbranched free or glycosidically bound polysialic acid according to general formula (1) as given as follows poly-(α(2 → 8 or 2 → 9)Neu5Ac)n (1) wherein Neu5Ac is N-acetylneuraminic acid, and n is an integer in the range from 14 to 26 and/or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, a polysaccharide composition comprising the polysialic acid (1), and the use as a medicament, particularly in the therapeutic and/or prophylactic treatment of degenerative, demyelinating and inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system, and degenerative or inflammatory retinal diseases.L'invention concerne un acide polysialique ramifié ou non, libre ou à liaison glycosidique de formule générale (1) suivante poly-(α(2 → 8 ou 2 → 9)Neu5Ac)n (1), Neu5Ac étant l'acide N-acétylneuraminique, et n étant un nombre entier compris dans la plage allant de 14 à 26 et/ou leurs sels pharmaceutiquement acceptables, une composition de polysaccharides comprenant l'acide polysialique (1), et son utilisation comme médicament, en particulier pour le traitement thérapeutique et/ou prophylactique de maladies dégénératives, démyélinisantes et inflammatoires du système nerveux central, et de maladies dégénératives ou inflammatoires de la rétine.
