PURPOSE: A composition containing pyruvic acid for protecting nerve cells is provided to suppress apoptosis induced by ethanol, and to prevent and treat neurological damage. CONSTITUTION: A composition for protecting nerve cells contains pyruvic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient. The composition suppresses apoptosis of nerve cells and neurological damage induced by ethanol. The composition prevents or treats FAS(fetal alcohol syndrome)-related brain damage, alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders(ARNDs), or sudden infant death syndrome. The composition additionally contains pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. A health functional food for protecting nerve cells contains pyruvic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient.본 발명은 피루브산을 포함하는 신경세포 보호용 조성물에 관한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게 본 발명은 에탄올에 의하여 유발된 신경세포 사멸을 억제할 수 있도록 피루브산 또는 이의 약학적으로 허용되는 염을 포함하는 신경세포 보호용 조성물 및 건강기능식품, 및 상기 조성물을 투여하여 에탄올에 의하여 유발된 신경세포 사멸로부터 신경세포를 보호하는 방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 신경세포 보호용 조성물은 에탄올에 의해 유도된 아폽토시스를 억제할 수 있으므로, 에탄올 등의 화학물질에 의한 신경손상의 예방 및 치료에 널리 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
