The present disclosure generally relates to sol-gel polymer composites comprising chitosan, a hydrophilic polymer, a gelling agent, and optionally additional components in a suitable medium. Advantageously, the sol-gel polymer composite can form a durable seal or strong solid in response to one or more physiological stimuli. The present disclosure further relates to medical and veterinary uses of the complex, particularly methods and delivery systems, to reduce or prevent the development of breast disorders in dairy animals. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a method and sol-gel polymer composite for creating a physical barrier on the nipple surface or in the nipple tube or cistern of a non-human animal for prophylactic treatment of breast disorders such as mastitis.
