Disclosed herein is the use of neuregulins to prevent or treat peripheral nerve injury, to attenuate, ameliorate or avoid the loss of peripheral nerve function. In particular, the use of neuragulins to prevent a peripheral nerve injury from a medical or surgical procedure, such as a tumour resection surgery, child birth, wherein the compound is administered prior to the medical or surgical procedure. The neuragulin is preferably GGF2 or an active fragment thereof.
