Disclosed is a low micronutrient infant formula comprising micronutrients and at least one macronutrient selected from the group consisting of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and combinations thereof, and having an energy content of 200 to less than 600 kilocalories per liter of formula, where the micronutrients include at least a combination of copper, phosphorous, iron, calcium, and zinc, at least two of which are present in an amount of at least 20% less (on a per volume basis) than the following conventional amounts: 728 &mug/L copper (aseptic liquid), 676 &mug/L copper (retort liquid), 720 &mug/L copper (reconstituted powder) 341 &mug/L phosphorous (aseptic liquid), 349 mg/L phosphorous (retort liquid), 332 mg/L phosphorous (reconstituted powder) 13.4 mg/L iron (aseptic liquid), 13.7 mg/L iron (retort liquid), 13.9 mg/L iron (reconstituted powder) 581 mg/L calcium (aseptic liquid), 585 copper mg/L (retort liquid), 580 mg/L copper (reconstituted powder) 6.46 mg/L zinc (aseptic liquid), 6.67 mg/L iron (retort liquid), and 6.69 mg/L zinc (reconstituted powder).
