A vertebral plate with additional features to improve the stability of the joint between the plate and the underlying bone. The bone plate can have one or more sharp ridges along its lower perimeter. When attached to the bone, the ridge bites into the bone and improves stability. Alternatively or additionally, the bone plate may have one or more holes for any spike that can be inserted once the plate is attached to the bone. By separating the spikes and having them as optional parts, the stability of the plate can be improved while increasing, decreasing or eliminating the possibility of the spikes hurting the patient. Further, the bone screw incorporates alternating notches and ridges into the head.
