A gas removal apparatus and method for use in an intravenous infusion system is provided. The apparatus includes an inlet connecting the fluid flow to the liquid chamber, an outlet projecting into the liquid chamber, and a diverting member proximal to the outlet. This flow diverting member is configured to prevent direct flow between the inlet and the outlet. The apparatus also includes a membrane that separates a part of the liquid chamber and the external chamber, and a degassing valve that fluidly connects the external chamber and the atmosphere.
