PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clearly display an observation image near a superficial layer at an appropriate luminance.
SOLUTION: When displaying the observation image near a superficial portion of the mucous membrane, a narrow-band laser light having a short wavelength (approximately 400-410 nm) is pulse-radiated from a laser light source 38. Pixel signals corresponding to Cy and Mg which have relatively high sensitivity to the short wavelength light out of pixel signals corresponding to respective color elements of Cy, Mg, Ye, and G are extracted in an initial circuit 28. A light modulation circuit 46 generates histogram data from the extracted pixel signals and determines whether or not a CCD 12 is in a saturated state. When determined to be the saturated state, the light modulation circuit changes the duty ratio of a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal for reducing the light intensity.
