A method of monitoring situational awareness of a vehicle driver D comprises receiving eye movement information, tracking information of one or more objects external to the vehicle 2, and correlating them to determine whether the driver eye movement corresponds to relative movement of the external objects. The driver eye tracking information may be obtained by analysing image data from an optical or infrared camera 10 facing the automobile driver and being configured to follow eye movements, and may contain a saccade pattern or angular velocity or acceleration. The external object tracking information may be obtained from an optical camera 8 in the front of the car, or may comprise an array of sensors to provide larger area coverage. The eye movements form an eye tracking signature which can be correlated with object tracking signatures by an electronic processor 3, determining whether the driver is observing an external object.
