A tree guard 1, 100, 200 is shown in each of Figures 1, 2 and 3. The tree guard 1 includes a rigid pole 10 adapted to be fixed in the ground G adjacent a sapling S to be 5 protected by surrounding it with a protection zone P. The pole 10 is fixed in the ground G to an extent that an upper portion 12 of the pole 10 stands upright above the ground G. The pole 10 is fixed so that it is laterally stable and substantially upright, extending along a substantially vertical longitudinal axis A. The tree guard 1 further includes a length of elongate, resiliently deformable material 10 in the form of corrodible metal wire 40 having a thickness gauge of about 2mm. The wire 40 is pliable and may be bent to form a certain shape in a preferred configuration, such as the various configurations shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. The wire 40 is malleable so that it can be fixed to the pole 10 and one or more locations 42-45, including an upper location 42 and a lower location 45. The one or more locations 42-45 are 15 advantageousl
