A patient intubating system includes an endotracheal tube to be inserted into the airway and which includes a cuff that can be inflated below the vocal cords and above the lungs. The system includes a measuring device for measuring at least one parameter that is indicative of leakage of secretion from above the cuff toward the lungs. The measured parameters may be acoustic, optical, pressure or flow parameters but do not include a measure of the carbon dioxide concentration between the cuff and the vocal cords which is a known measure for leakage detection in such intubating systems.
