Compounds (I) comprising a hydrophilic tail linked via an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group to a group comprising a carbon or heteroatom free electron pair and/or pi electrons are used to prepare pharmaceutical compositions for preventing or treating cancer, pathological consequences of alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, steatohepatitis, pancreatitis, kidney and liver diseases or reperfusion injury, as an antidote to environmental toxins and medicament intoxication, for prolonging the residence time of medicaments in vivo or for combatting the toxic side effected of chemotherapeutic agents. Compounds of formula (I) are used to prepare pharmaceutical compositions for preventing or treating cancer, pathological consequences of alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, steatohepatitis, pancreatitis, kidney and liver diseases or reperfusion injury, as an antidote to environmental toxins and medicament intoxication, for prolonging the residence time of medicaments in vivo or for combatting the toxic side effected of chemotherapeutic agents.
