A litter box for an animal, such as a cat, wherein the litter box comprises a housing with a box opening to provide access to an interior space of the housing, a litter tray to in use hold litter, which litter tray is located in the interior space of the housing and mounted in a rotatable manner to rotate about a rotation axis, wherein the litter tray comprises a litter compartment to receive the litter when the litter tray is rotated and a separation member located at a compartment opening of the litter compartment to prevent that waste enters the litter compartment when the litter tray is rotated, a waste area located in the interior space and below the litter tray to receive the waste when the litter tray is rotated, and pivot arms configured to pivot about a pivot axis from an open position into a closed position, and vice 10 versa, wherein the pivot arms surround the waste area in the open position and are in contact with each other in the closed position, forming an air tight seal.
