A dental implant 130 for preserving soft tissue and promoting bone growth comprises an elongated implant body having a coronal end portion 131 and an apical end portion 132, an external thread 140 and a helical flute arrangement 150 which spirals in an opposite direction to the external thread, at least one flute tapering off on the face of a blunt tip 139 formed at the apical end portion. The flute has a greater depth than the thread and a pitch equal to or greater than the thread pitch. The thread height may vary. A coronal flank 151 of the flute provides a cutting edge. Coronal and apical sections 133,134 of the implant may be tapered, and separated by a knee 135. The thread and/or flute may comprise a groove 141.
