A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device and a control method thereof reduce the preparation time for MRI photographing a patient. A patient table has a transfer unit for moving a patient inside the magnet assembly. A fixing unit includes a signal transmitting unit. A signal receiving unit is installed on a diagnosis area of the patient or a radio frequency (RF) coil attached to a diagnosis area of the patient, and a patient position determination system calculates position information of the diagnosis area of the patient or the RF coil if the signal receiving unit detects a signal output from the signal transmitting unit when the transfer unit transfers the patient to inside the magnet assembly and to transfer the diagnosis area of the patient to an optimum photographic area inside the magnet assembly based on the position information.
