The surgical system includes a drive unit on the support. The drive unit includes a motor or other actuator and a plurality of output elements arranged such that the operation of each drive unit linearly translates a corresponding one of the output elements. The surgical device has a working element extending through the elongate shaft to a distal articulating section and an input subsystem associated with the proximal end of the shaft. The piston of the linear translationally enabled input element or input subsystem is each associated with a corresponding one of the actuating elements. An input element and an output element are arranged such that operation of the actuator linearly translates the output element, causing linear translation of the corresponding input element and engagement of the actuating elements.
