PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide means which improves the workability of a guide wire before it is inserted into a blood vessel and has excellent lubricity in the blood vessel.

SOLUTION: Since fine particles of a pH-responsive water-swelling polymer which are swelled with water under the condition of a pH value of 7 or higher and having an average particle size of 1 to 10 &mum under dry condition are chemically fixed to the surface of the guide wire and a metal coupling agent is previously applied thereto, flash is very limited, and the fine particles of the pH-responsive water-swelling polymer are scarcely separated. The guide wire has excellent durability.
