The present invention relates to a compound selected from 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (5HMF), a prodrug thereof, a derivative thereof, and a metabolite thereof, said derivative being capable of enhancing the affinity of hemoglobin to oxygen and/or being capable of increasing oxygen delivery to microcapillaries and/or sinusoids said metabolite preferably being selected from 5-hydroxymethylfuroic acid, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and N-(hydroxymethyl)furoylglycine, for use in a method of treating or preventing a condition characterized by a need for neurogenesis； neovascularization of the central nervous system； and/or enhanced neuronal function.La présente invention concerne un composé choisi parmi le 5-hydroxyméthyl-2-furfural (5HMF), un promédicament de celui-ci, un dérivé de celui-ci, et un métabolite de celui-ci, ledit dérivé étant capable d'augmenter l'affinité de l'hémoglobine pour l'oxygène et/ou étant capable d'augmenter l'apport d'oxygène aux microcapillaires et/ou sinusoïdes, ledit métabolite étant de préférence choisi parmi l'acide 5-hydroxyméthylfuroïque, l'acide 2,5-furanedicarboxylique et la N-(hydroxyméthyl)furoylglycine, pour utilisation dans un procédé de traitement ou de prévention d'un état caractérisé par un besoin de neurogenèse； une néovascularisation du système nerveux central； et/ou une fonction neuronale augmentée.
