The medical device includes an outer housing (400) having a first wall (401) having a proximal end and a distal end and defining a first passage (402). A storage housing (412) is slidably received in the first passage (402). The storage housing (412) has a proximal end and a distal end and a wall with an inner wall defining a helical path (421). A portion of the device includes a carriage (422) that removably receives a medical sharp (423). The carriage (422) is slidably received at the distal end of the storage housing (412). There is latch means (428) for holding the carriage (422) in a first position within the storage housing (412). A follower (432) is connected to the carriage (422) and engages the helical path (421). A stored energy device (434) is connected to the follower (432) and the carriage (422). The drive means (419) moves the storage housing (412) toward the distal end of the first passage (402), thereby releasing the latch means (428), causing the stored energy device (434) to spiral.
