A method and apparatus according to a particular embodiment of the invention comprises applying an adhesive to the skin of a human subject. The applicator is brought into contact with the adhesive so that the adhesive is disposed between the applicator and the skin of the subject. The applicator is activated to cool the tissue region through the skin of the subject, the heat transfer surface of the applicator, and the adhesive. During cooling of the tissue area, the adhesive is cooled, thereby reversibly strengthening the adhesive between the skin of the subject and the heat transfer surface to form a strong bond therebetween. The reinforced adhesive prevents any movement of the applicator to the skin.
