PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide iron powder for a seed coating film and a coating material for seed that can be easily and reliably adhered to the whole seed outer surface, and are superior in mass productivity.SOLUTION: Iron powder for a seed coating film according to the present invention is the iron powder for a seed coating film adhered to a seed outer surface, and comprises amorphous iron oxide powder and atomized iron powder having a ratio of passing a sieve of 90 mass% or more, the sieve having an opening of 106 μm, and the iron powder for a seed coating film has an apparent density of 2.51 g/cm3 or more and less than 3.18 g/cm3. Preferably, a mass ratio of the iron oxide powder to the atomized iron powder is 1 or less. Preferably, a ratio of passing a sieve with an opening of 150 μm of the iron oxide powder is 92 mass% or more. The coating material for seed according to the present invention comprises the iron powder for a seed coating film and an oxidation accelerator.
