A metallic mesh sleeve (1) for inhibiting access to a region of an appendage (2) of a being comprising an elongate drawstring (10, 10') interlaced within the mesh thereby to reduce the size of a portion of the sleeve (1) to at least partially conform to the size and/or shape of the appendage (2). The sleeve may be open at both ends or open at only a single end. The mesh may be folded, rolled or beaded over itself to conceal the mesh ends. The mesh may be knitted; it may be made of a corrosion resistant metal, such as stainless steel; the yarn may include an antibacterial element; the yarn may comprise a silver alloy. Method of use, which may protect from lick granuloma lesion, is also claimed. The string may be tied or knotted to hold the sleeve or sock in place.
