A novel gene 08P1D4 (also designated STEAP-l) and its encoded protein, andvariants thereof, are described wherein STEAP-l exhibits tissue specificexpression in normal adult tissue, and is aberrantly expressed in the cancerslisted in Table I. Consequently, STEAP-l provides a diagnostic, prognostic,prophylactic and/or therapeutic target for cancer, The STEAP-l gene orfragment thereof, or its encoded protein, or variants thereof, or a fragmentthereof, can be used to elicit a humoral or cellular immune response；antibodies or T cells reactive with STEAP-l can be used in active or passiveimmunization.
