The present invention relates to an optical blood monitoring system and method therefor without the need to obtain an accurate intensity value of a light beam impinging on a blood layer being measured during analysis. The system of the present invention is operated such that at least two optical measurements through blood layers of different thicknesses can be made in substantially the same system. Due to the equivalence of the system, both measurements can be compared and the mass extinction coefficient of the blood can be calculated based on the known blood layer thickness and the two measured values.
