The invention features immunogenic compositions and vaccines containing an optimized human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) envelope (Env) polypeptide (e.g., a stabilized trimer of optimized HIV Env polypeptides) or a polynucleotide encoding an optimized HIV Env polypeptide and uses thereof.
