The invention relates to a medical or non-medical variable-height double bed (1) which comprises a base (2) equipped with a frame (3) in two distinct parts (4, 5) on each of which are mounted a backrest (6, 8) and a leg rest (7, 9), the said frame (3) comprising removable first connecting pieces (24, 25) designed to join the said two parts (4, 5) together, keeping them snugly one beside the other. A chassis (35) comprises two parts (36, 37). Two scissor-stays (38, 39) are arranged respectively between the parts (4, 5) of the frame (3) and the parts (36, 37) of the chassis (35). The bed comprises two remote controls and an electronic interface system configured so that the first remote control can control actuation of the first backrest (6) and of the first leg rest (7) and the second remote control can control the actuation of the second backrest (8) and of the second leg rest (9) and so that the two remote controls can jointly and/or separately control the actuation of the two scissor-stays (38, 39) synchronously.
