The present invention is directed to a method for determining whether a compound present at the surface of, or in the eggshell, is a biomarker specific of a characteristic of an embryo in an unhatched egg. The invention is also directed to a non-destructive method for the determination of a characteristic of an embryo, preferably the gender of an embryo, in an unhatched egg. The invention also relates to a kit to implement such a method.
