Several diterpene glycosides (e.g., rubusoside, rebaudioside, steviol monosideand stevioside) were discovered toenhance the solubility of a number of pharmaceutically and medicinallyimportant compounds, including but not limited to, paclitaxel,camptothecin, curcumin, tanshinone HA, capsaicin, cyclosporine, erythromycin,nystatin, itraconazole, and celecoxib. Theuse of the diterpene glycoside rubusoside increased solubility in all testedcompounds. The diterpene glycosides are a naturally occurringclass of water solubility- enhancing compounds that are non-toxic and thatwill be useful as new complexing agents or excipientsin the pharmaceutical, agricultural (e.g., solubilizing pesticides), cosmeticand food industries. Aqueous solutions by usingrubusoside to increase the solubility of otherwise insoluble drugs will haveseveral new routes of administration. In addition,aqueous solutions of therapeutic compounds with rubusoside were shown toretain the known pharmacological activity of thecompounds.
