Disclosed are nanoparticles containing a polymer-structured MERS virus protein and a nanoparticle-containing composition formulated for administration as an immunogenic composition. The present invention also provides a vector construct encoding the protein and a host cell containing the vector construct. The disclosure also encompasses methods of producing nanoparticles and administering them to vertebrates, including methods of inducing an immune response against MERS that reduces or prevents infection by viruses.
