The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for measuring renal glomerular filtration rate or assessing renal function in a patient in need thereof. The method comprises administering to the patient a pyrazine compound of Formula I and monitoring the rate at which the patient's kidneys remove pyrazine from the systemic circulation of the patient. Pyrazine compounds fluoresce when exposed to electromagnetic radiation, which fluorescence is detected using one or more sensors. The rate of decrease of fluorescence in the patient's body is used to calculate the patient's renal glomerular filtration rate.
