A means for categorizing vegetation. One invention categorises vegetation 206 as a potential impact on a target object, e.g. will a tree grow in such a way as to interfere with pylons. This method involves determining a first set of data 202, 204 related to the target vegetation, and collecting data related to the object 202, 204. Another invention is a method for categorizing vegetation by determining the identity of the vegetation, determining characteristics of that plant, and updating the information stored in a memory. Still another invention is a system for categorizing vegetation by recording data with a mobile device, and using it to update the memory stored on a server. The categorization may result in a required response, e.g. trimming or cutting back the trees to prevent them interfering with nearby telegraph poles. The characteristics of the vegetation may involve generating a 3D polygon locus around the tree.
