PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seal assembly which does not cause rupture or split.SOLUTION: A seal assembly adapted for use in conjunction with a trocar assembly (12) includes a plurality of seal segments (24a-24d), each seal segment including a peripheral edge (28) and a seam edge (32). Each seal segment further includes a first section (38) and a second section (40) with a vertical wall (42) connecting the first section (38) and the second section (40) in such a way that the first section (38) is displaced relative to the second section (40) such that the first section (38) of a first seal segment may be placed upon the second section (40) of a second seal segment with the first sections (38) of the first and second seal segments lying in the same plane and the second sections (40) of the first and second seal segments lying in the same plane.
