The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating malaria containing a Petasites japonicus extract as an active component. The Petasites japonicus extract is a bio-safe natural extract with low cytotoxicity, which effectively inhibits the growth of malaria protozoa, and malaria protozoa exhibiting resistance to conventional malaria treatments, and which increases the survival rate of animal models infected with malaria parasite. Thus, the present invention provides a composition containing the Petasites japonicus extract as the active component as an anti-malaria agent.본 발명은 머위 추출물을 유효성분으로 함유하는 말라리아 예방 또는 치료용 약학조성물에 관한 것으로, 상기 머위 추출물은 세포 독성이 낮은 생체에 안전한 천연 추출물로, 말라리아 원충을 비롯하여 종래 말라리아 치료제에 대한 내성을 나타내는 말라리아 원충의 성장을 효과적으로 억제시켰으며, 말라리아 기생충에 감염된 동물 모델의 생존율이 향상되는 것으로 확인됨에 따라, 상기 머위 추출물을 유효성분으로 함유하는 조성물을 항말라리아제로 제공하고자 한다.
