The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, treating or diagnosing vascular smooth muscle cell proliferative diseases and a diagnosis marker detection method thereof. More particularly, the present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating smooth muscle cell proliferative diseases, which comprises a recombinant expression vector containing polynucleotides encoding FGF12, FGF12 protein, or a fragment thereof as an active ingredient； a composition for diagnosing smooth muscle cell proliferative diseases, which comprises a formulation for determining a degree of expression of FGF12 mRNA or FGF12 protein； and a method for detecting a marker of smooth muscle cell proliferative diseases using the same composition. The composition comprising polynucleotides encoding FGF12 according to the present invention over-expresses FGF12 to inhibit proliferation of smooth muscle cells effectively. In addition, it is expected that the composition comprising FGF12 protein or a fragment thereof provides a similar effect. Thus, it is possible to develop genes or protein therapeutic agents effective for preventing or treating smooth muscle cell proliferative diseases.
