PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for providing an optimal amount of compression to tissue for an optimal formation of staples and sutures.SOLUTION: An apparatus 100 for determining the optimal amount of tissue compression prior to the insertion of a surgical element to the tissue includes a measuring device 106 adapted to detect a tissue parameter upon the compression of tissue. The measuring device 106 has an indicator 101 that reaches a threshold after the tissue is compressed for a predetermined time period, and indicates to a surgeon the event of the threshold. The surgical element is inserted to the compressed tissue. The threshold is indicative of the surgical element being properly formed in the tissue at the indicated time period.
