The invention relates to N-hydroxylsulfonamide derivatives for formula (I),(II) or (III), in which the variables are asdefined in the claims, that donate nitroxyl (HNO) under physiologicalconditions and are useful in treating and/or preventing the onsetand/or development of diseases or conditions that are responsive to nitroxyltherapy, including heart failure and ischemia/reperfusioninjury. N-hydroxylsulfonamide derivatives release HNO at a controlled rateunder physiological conditions, and the rate of HNOrelease is modulated by varying the nature and location of the functionalgroups on the N-hydroxylsulfonamide derivatives.
