ABSTRACT A device for detecting and determining the extent of morphological abnormalities of RBCs in a blood sample comprises an image capturing unit, an image processing unit and a display. In one embodiment, the image capturing unit captures image of the blood sample wherein the processing unit process the captured image and detects the RBCs of the blood sample. Further size, shape and texture of the detected RBCs are compared with corresponding standard size, shape and texture of the RBCs to determine the extent of morphological abnormality of RBCs in the blood sample. In another embodiment, a method for detecting and quantifying the extent of morphological abnormality of RBCs comprises capturing an image of the blood sample, processing the captured image for detecting RBCs of the blood sample using a blob detection technique, determining characteristic features of detected RBCs and comparing with preloaded standard characteristic features of the RBCs.
