PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for detecting temperature of an ultrasonic surgical apparatus, and an improved method for detecting a tissue type.SOLUTION: An ultrasonic surgical apparatus and a method are provided. The ultrasonic surgical apparatus includes: a signal generator 1002 for outputting a drive signal with a frequency； an oscillation structure 1018 for receiving the drive signal and oscillating at the frequency of the drive signal； and a bridge circuit 1008 for detecting the mechanical motion of the oscillation structure and outputting a signal representative of the mechanical motion. The ultrasonic surgical apparatus further includes a microcontroller 1004 for receiving the signal output from the bridge circuit. The microcontroller determines an instantaneous frequency at which the oscillation structure is oscillating based on the received signal and determines adjustment of the frequency necessary for keeping the oscillation structure oscillating at the resonant frequency.
