An isolated population of kidney cells harvested from differentiated cells of the kidney, which is expanded in vitro, is provided herein. The kidney cells may comprise kidney periurethral stromal cells, and preferably are capable of producing erythropoietin (EPO). Kidney cells can also be selected based on EPO production.
