A tray 10 for use in a nutrient film technique (NFT) system has an inlet and outlet allowing flow of an aqueous nutrient solution. The tray has an internal base with raised internal features 14 and an inlet recessed area 16 for receiving the solution and an outlet recessed area 26 having an elongate slot-like opening 28 extending substantially across the tray. The plurality of features may be kite shaped (rhombus shaped) and are such that their longer ends point towards the inlet end of the tray. The internal base may further include at least one longitudinal raised feature 34 extending along the length of the tray to create two flow paths, the raised feature may also divide the inlet recessed area and the outlet recessed area. A plurality of trays may be arranged longitudinally in a tiered structure.
