A wheelchair with a front wheel and a pair of larger rear wheels wherein the larger wheels are mounted on an axle and have hand pedals attached to the axles wherein the hand pedals can be rotated either clockwise or anticlockwise within the confines of the outer rim of the wheels to propel the wheelchair, have 8 gears and a neutral, can be retracted and can be detached. The hand pedal may have a head 17 which arranged for attachment to a socket on the wheelchair and there may be a quick release button mounted on the head. The hand pedal may have an arm which is telescopically retractable and a handle 16 at its end and there may also be a lever to lock the hand pedal in position.
