The drive assembly (56) is movable from a retracted position to an advanced position to actuate the tool assembly (44). The assembly further comprises a body portion (42) configured to releasably engage the loading unit (40). The body portion (42) includes a transverse member positioned to extend into the loading unit (40) and engage the drive member (56) to retain the drive member (56) of the loading unit (40) in the retracted position. The body portion (42) is removable from the loading unit (40), and a locking portion (92) prevents removal of the body portion (42) before the loading unit (40) is attached to the surgical instrument.
