摘要:
The present invention seeks to provide a fiber-reinforced device that can provide precise shape control and have highly controlled tear properties. A fiber-reinforced device in the form of medical apparatus is provided comprising a balloon and a single continuous fiber. The balloon including a central portion (1301), a first tapered or conical portion (1303a) and a second tapered or conical portion (1303b). Each tapered or conical portion is connected to the cylindrical central portion along a longitudinal axis that extends from a first end of the balloon to a second end of the balloon. The single continuous fiber includes at least one first fiber strand (1313a) that extends substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis along the central portion (1301) of the balloon and radially at an angle of approximately 35 to 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis around at least a portion of at least one of the first and second tapered portions (1303a, 1303b). There is also provided methods of making such a fiber-reinforced composite balloon, comprising steps involving applying the single continuous fiber to the balloon. The fiber-reinforced balloon provided by the invention may help prevent helical and circumferential failures, help maintain the position of the fibers on the tapered or conical portions and help reduce a build up of fiber at the end of the cone.
