A biopsy device is provided that includes a tube member, a hollow shaft, and an elongated fiber body. The hollow shaft has a tip and a shaft, and a notch facing laterally (to the side) can be formed in the tip portion of the shaft. The elongate fiber body may include at least one optical fiber having a tip, preferably at least two optical fibers. The tube member is movable relative to the shaft between a first position where the notch is covered by the tube member and a second position where the notch is not covered by the tube member.
